About Us
Khowutzun Forest Services is owned by the Cowichan Tribes, the largest band
in BC, with a population of more than 3,800 community members. The
traditional ancestral Cowichan territory is in and around the city of
Duncan, B.C.
COWICHAN TRIBES
- Located in the Cowichan Valley in mid-Vancouver Island, British
Columbia.
- Comprised of six traditional villages (Kw'amutsun, Qwum'yiqun',
Hwulqwselu, S'amuna', L'uml'umuluts, Hinupsum) on nine Indian Reserves.
- Total reserve area is currently 2,389 hectares (5,903 acres).
- Core Traditional Territory is 376,308 hectares (929,844 acres).
- Approximately 3,800 registered members. About half live on the
reserve.
- Governed by an elected Chief and 12 Councillors, within the
framework of the Indian Act.
- Part of the Hul'qumi'num Treaty Group, and in Stage 4 (Agreement in
Principle) of the Treaty Process (http://www.hulquminum.bc.ca/).
- Administers programs in Children and Families, Education, Health,
Housing and Social Development.
- Owns and operates Khowutzun Development Corporation (KDC) and the
Group of Companies, which includes:
- Khowutzun Forest Services Limited Partnership
- Khowutzun Mustimuhw Contractors Limited Partnership
- Khowutzun Millwork & Joinery Limited Partnership
- Quw'utsun Cultural and Conference Centre
- Cherry Point Vineyards & Estate Winery
- Cowichan Tribes has annual revenues of over $30 million, and employs
approximately 280 people in the Band Office
- KDC Group of Companies has annual revenues of over $16 million and
employs approximately 300 people.
